  • Welcome to the World of FanEdits!

What are FanEdits, and why make them? FanEdits are an artform where someone takes a video source/sources and rearranges them with video editing software to create either a modified, or even radically new version of a movie.

Matt Singer at IFC has written an interesting article about the blurry line between film critic and filmmaker which is becoming more blurred with the advent of Fanedits.

Arguably the most famous film critic filmmaker, and certainly the spiritual father to this new marriage between film commentary and film production is still almost entirely anonymous. In 2001, this faceless, nameless editor took George Lucas‘ cut of “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” — which, in an interesting bit of timing, is coming back to theaters this Friday in a new, 3D print — and excised almost twenty minutes from the film, removing most of the scenes featuring characters like Jar Jar Binks and Anakin Skywalker that fans of the original “Star Wars” trilogy hated. He called it “Episode 1.1 – The Phantom Edit,” and he was so scared of reprisals from Lucasfilm that he credited himself only as “The Phantom Editor.” This all took place so long ago that the project was initially considered by many to be nothing more than an urban legend. Those who saw it, at least at first, did so on dubbed VHS tapes. Just a decade later, it’s astonishing how much has changed.
The article goes on to discuss a new Fanedit from Peet Gelderblom called “Raising Cain Re-cut.”
As Gelderblom explains in an essay that accompanies his “Re-cut,” De Palma was never fully satisfied with the structure of his film and, exasperated in the editing room, he radically revised his initial conception of the picture during post-production. Gelderblom decided to take the theatrical version of “Raising Cain” and restore it to something closer to the director’s original vision.

Inline ImageWOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN (X-MEN CONTINUITY CUT PART 1) by firstling faneditor Leeroy0115, has been released!

This is a fanedit of X-MEN, & X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE.

Leeroy: "With x-men prequels now being made the characters of raven, erik and xavier have become established characters with the release of x-men first class. with potential sequels being made a new trilogy could be made set before the events of the first x-men film.
With that in mind this could be the first film that introduces the character of wolverine of the x-men universe (though he did a small cameo in first class) i wanted to show a brief look into the story of wolverine and make him the main focus of the film

Thank you to all the voters and all the editors who had a fanedit released in December!
This month the winner is again a first time faneditor (!) with a funny (but possibly controversial) take on Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace named The Ridiculous Menace.
The best advice would be: try it to make your own mind about it!

    Congratulations, TV’s Frink!

Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi bicker like an old married couple as they try to figure out what exactly is happening to the Naboobians. Nute Gunray attempts to keep track of how many things come in twos. Ric Olie observes a great deal. And much more!

Inline Image From ScreenJabber comes news that Lucasfilm has ordered the removal of the Fan Documentary "Returning to Jedi" from Youtube.

    Tim Pelan reports:
In what seems difficult to see as anything other than a case of sour grapes, Lucasfilm has successfully ordered the removal of Jamie Benning's Star Wars filmumentary tribute, Returning To Jedi, from YouTube.

Apparently Lucasfilm was asked to look at the filmumentary recently, and then 20th Century Fox ordered the removal on the grounds of copyright infringement. Jamie has also removed his other extremely popular filmumentaries, Star Wars Begins, Building Empire, and preliminary work on his soon to be released Raiding The Lost Ark..."
"He intends to put these on Vimeo instead; Star Wars Begins has already been successfully transferred to vimeo, and Raiding has specifically been edited for higher quality viewing in this format."
"Jamie isn't the only fan film maker to feel the heavy hand of Lucas. Adrian Sayce, who has "remastered" Star Wars to correct colour grading, special effects errors, and added subtle effects, has been barred from uploading more videos to facebook of his new edit of The Empire Strikes Back."
Unfortunately it seems that once again 20th Century Fox/Lucasfilm/George have mistakenly perceived a not-for-profit fan project, that only serves to enhance the legacy of Star Wars, as a threat to their property and its ability to make profits. One would think that the studios would do good to take the very popular fan created materials and release them with, or as a separate companion release to their source material, but it seems that great works like Returning to Jedi and Raiders: The Adaptation will continue to be pushed into the dark corners of the internet.
